For my Film Theory and Application class this quarter I’m going to be making a few “Video Sketches” — short film explorations/experiments.
Here’s my first Video Sketch, composed of a number of quick shots I took at this pretty ridiculous party I went to in Minneapolis.
Warning: brief nudity. Mature audiences only.

Click to Play.
I initially shot this stuff as potential insert shots for a project I was working on over the summer. In a way, the camera insulated me from the party, and gave me a sense of purpose. I felt surprisingly comfortable because I was just documenting– I had a reason for being there.
Anyway, I kinda like how this turned out. Let me know what you think!

Welp, I’ve finally given in.
I’ve resisted for a long time, bemoaning the quality of YouTube videos and the senselessness of youtube comments. I thought my website was pretty much the only place my work should be seen online– in high quality, and in context with my other work.
But uh, in a bizarre turn of events, youtube videos now look better than the videos on my site. So now, you can watch much of my (newer) stuff at HD quality.
Check them out here!
I think my philosophy has changed a little bit– the more stuff you have out there, the better, right?

On my way.
After a fantastic and semiproductive 6-week break in Maryland, I’m headed back down to Savannah for school. I’m currently a junior, and have about a year and a half left at SCAD.
I aim to make good use of that time. During this break I wrote two short screenplays (well, more like one and a half) which I’m really excited about. At school I’ve gotten to the point where I feel that the most valuable (and educational) thing I can be doing right now is pursuing my own independent projects.
So my plan for the next six months at school is to make an ambitious short independent film– with a real cast, crew, and budget. It’s an intimidating prospect for me, but I’m determined to make it happen. If you want to learn more about the project or possibly get involved, please let me know!
I’ll be posting more about it shortly, and hopefully will launch a website for the project.

This is a little diagram I drew a few months ago, but it seems like something that belongs on a blog. It really sums up my feelings at this moment in my life:

(It gets steeper.)
Reality is humbling. The more I understand about how the world works, the more unlikely it seems that I will achieve my ambitions.
I think there are three ways to respond to this revised concept of one’s prospects in life:
- Pretend it’s not true.
- Get depressed by it.
- Become invigorated by it.
It’s easy to keep yourself naive, or to allow yourself to be intimidated. But I am making an effort to become invigorated by the sheer unlikelihood of success. I am trying to wrangle the feeling of near-certain doom, and let that drive my ambition.
Ultimately, I could certainly be happy doing a hundred different things. But I’m not going to give up my soaring dreams just because it’s fantastically improbable.

It’s been a while since I’ve done any drawing. It’s easy to forget how much I enjoy it. A couple nights ago my brother came back from college for the winter break, and we each sketched each other simultaneously, on opposite sides of the sketchbook.
I experimented a little bit with caricatures, which I really haven’t done before. (Definitely inspired by my friend Sagan Lacy– check out his caricatures. Mine suck in comparison.) Here are the sketches:

And for reference:

Definitely want to do some more drawing…
